When you seek the definition for “Social” words like community, collective, and recreational pop up to help define.  Interestingly enough an antonym of social is “Individual” and being an individual isn’t a bad thing but being an individual that feels separated or alone is against human nature.  In psychology there is a theory known as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs which breaks out five categories of human needs typically depicted as a pyramid, the bottom two represent basic needs, the middle two psychological needs and the top of the pyramid is self-fulfillment.  Smack dab in the middle identified as a psychological need is belongingness and a sense of connection.

It is important for us to remember that we are not alone in all of this, although it may feel like it when being asked to “Stay at Home”, to limit travel, and avoid contact.  Somehow the world still turns, and although the struggle is real, just trying to manage our basic needs like food, water, and safety, after a year of surviving the pandemic the need for connection begins to be just as important.

But, how do we socialize while staying socially distant?  In the year 2021, it is easier than you think!  The restrictions in place are for everyone’s safety and to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.  The current Executive Orders allow for indoor activity at specific levels of capacity with required face coverings and have continued to allow outdoor mass gatherings with a cap at 50.

Do you know what the cap on virtual gatherings is? Zero! We’ve seen the healthcare system pivot to virtual care and telephonic consults, and the workplace quote of the pandemic has been “hey, you are on mute”, so why not go virtual with our social lives.  Have you missed socializing with your neighbors or are you new to the neighborhood and haven’t even had the opportunity to get to know your neighbors?

Don’t let the pandemic keep you from fulfilling an important human need, stay connected and join the Fourth Ward CLT Social Committee as we learn to pivot, socialize while social distancing, and turn to virtual to stay “in-touch” while avoiding contact.  Follow our events calendar to stay in the know, never miss out and sign-up for reminder emails, or to receive event reminder text messages, text @fwsocial to 81010 (standard msg. and data rates may apply).
