Service Project

February Service Project

Our February Service Project is to donate coats to the Salvation Army
Feb 8-23rd.
Drop off gently used and new coats of all sizes:
Gloria and Jim’s front porch, 427 W. Pine St., Charlotte NC 28202 (look for the bins behind the rocking chairs on the porch.) You can also drop them off at Fifth and Poplar and tell them that Shirley Cress Dudley will pick them up.

We are all looking for silver linings in our everyday Covid life. Given all the time we have at home, cleaning and creating new space has proven to be incredibly therapeutic. At this point in February, most of us have a fair gauge on the winter coats that still give you joy and the unused ones occupying valuable closet space.

Our winter coat drive is a timely opportunity to make room and give the gift of warmth. We welcome enthusiastic participation, as we are collecting and donating new and gently used coats to The Salvation Army. All coats will be distributed to their men, women, and children’s shelters, as well as The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte.

Most of us are familiar with Salvation Army thrift stores. In addition, they offer a variety of intricate community outreach programs and have rooted a strong foundation and presence in Charlotte. Their life-altering programs have the breadth and depth to create permanent change for a wide range of communities in need. We invite anyone curious to learn more about specific services The Salvation Army provides to our community.

Here are highlights:

  • Homeless Services
Offering The Center of Hope, a way home to families needing emergency shelter,
transitional housing, rapid rehousing, and shelter diversion in order to get back on their
    feet.
  • Adult Rehabilitation Centers
Providing proper therapy and training skills for men with addictions, creating
purposeful transition into independence and self-sufficiency.
  • Disaster Services
Bringing relief to first responders and victims of disasters by providing food, clothing,
shelter, and spiritual comfort during emergency situations.
  • Worship Centers
Ministering with Community Corp (Worship) Centers for those in need of spiritual
support, guidance, and healing. There are 2 locations in the Charlotte area. Everyone is
    welcome.
  • Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs
Doing Whatever It Takes to arm youth with tools of knowledge and education to have a
bright future and develop strategies to deal with racial unrest and social injustices.
  • Camp Walter Johnson
Providing youth with an outdoor, life-changing summer camp experience-located at
High Rock Lake in Denton, NC. Equipt with waterfront activities, ropes course, athletic
fields, and much more creative and spiritual learning space for youth to explore new
boundaries and adventures. More info here.
  • Project Fight
Helping victims of human trafficking find refuge and healing to break the bonds of
hopelessness and become self-sufficient moving forward.

How, where, and when do I donate coats of all sizes?

There is a lot we cannot do during the pandemic, but what we can do will keep us moving–onward! #fourthwardclt

I hope in the years to come, everyone will be able to take pride
in how they responded to this challenge, Queen Elizabeth II
