John Causby and Randy Cernoshosky purchased their home located at 400 N. Poplar Street in 1999. This charming Victorian home was originally located in the Brooklyn neighborhood, today known as the Second Ward.

The owners inherited the Koi Pond, a rotten picket fence and “one of everything” in the garden. After replacing the roof, most of the garden was flattened- so the owners effectively started over with a blank slate.

Around the time this home and its gardens were being restored, the city was building the fountains at 9th and 8th Streets. The owners offered to purchase the remaining palettes of granite blocks and used them to border the gardens

After making the granite lined paths and lovingly planting each of the 300 boxwoods, the rest of the garden followed.

The owners finished the brick wall surrounding the propery, providing privacy, bricked the driveway, and added a few fountains, putting in place the hardscape and structural elements of an incredible urban oasis.

The rest happened over time and continues to evolve. Mixing herbs and plans that offer interest year-round, the style resembles the romantic gardens of Charleston. Today, the gardens are a significant compliment to the home, and are of true reflection of the owners’ sense of style.
